About Southampton Art Society
The object of the Southampton Art Society is to further the interest of artists in the Southampton area and to provide opportunities for exhibiting their work. The Society meets on the second Monday of each month at the Atherley Bowling Club in Hill Lane, Southampton. At these meetings we invite various speakers and artists to lecture or demonstrate different mediums and techniques in the visual arts. These meetings are also an opportunity for workshops where members can share their knowledge. During the course of the year the Society has exhibitions of members work at venues in Southampton; criticism evenings; excursions to major exhibitions in London; painting trips to places that will inspire in the City of Southampton and elsewhere; coffee mornings and social events. The Society's Outdoor Painting Group meets on summer days for sketching and painting in the city and surrounding countryside. The Society A.G.M. takes place in March when we elect the officers and committee for the following year. This is a lively occasion when members can voice their criticism and make suggestions. Members also receive a Newsletter published with news about events, exhibition notices, articles on art in general and other information of interest. It also publishes articles, letters and reviews from members when there is space. The Society is funded by members subscriptions and grants for special exhibitions and events. Past grants have been received from Southampton Arts Council, Southampton City Council and the Lottery Fund.
